Studying physics and astronomy opens many doors. The quantitative modeling experience, the computer programming and laboratory skills, and the thoughtful approach to problem solving are relevant in many arenas and prepare students for a variety of career paths post-Carleton.

Physics majors in the past few years have gone on to graduate school in architecture, astronomy, civil engineering, earth and planetary science, electrical engineering, law, mechanical engineering, medical physics, and physics. And graduates who have gone directly into the work force have gotten positions in teaching, engineering, software development, and investment banking, as well as research positions.

There are several physics and astronomy courses available for first year students. This course satisfies the laboratory science graduation requirement and has no prerequisites. Courses cover topics in classical and quantum mechanics, special relativity, atomic and nuclear physics, electricity and magnetism, statistical physics and thermodynamics, astrophysics, materials science, optics, condensed matter physics, electronics, computational physics, contemporary experimental physics, as well as occasional electives in medical physics and general relativity.

See the flowchart for an overview of the introductory courses in the physics and astronomy department.

Note that Math or is a pre- or co- requisite for PhysicsPhysicsand Physics All introductory courses have a required 4-hour lab each week associated with the course. Students with a strong high school physics background are encouraged to take Physics in Winter Term. In order to ensure that students maximize their potential for success, the physics and astronomy department has found, in most cases, it is not recommended that a student skip the introductory sequence, even if the student has taken a strong AP or IB course.

Although some of the content may be similar to what students have seen in high school classes, the department finds that there are additional benefits that students gain from taking introductory physics at Carleton, including experience working collegially with other potential majors on problem sets and labs, as well as gaining a familiarity with the expectations of our department.

Pre-med students are required to take 2 full terms of physics with labs. The topics covered in Physics and Physics are the most relevant for those wishing to take the MCAT, but pre-med students are not limited to those courses in the sequence. For engineering students who do not intend to be majors, only Physics and Physics satisfy the program prerequisites.

Physics fall is taught during the first five weeks of the term and is designed for students who have not taken a high school course. This course should be followed by Physics fall taught during the second five weeks of term.

Students who have not taken calculus in high school should plan to take Physics in the winter term.

The spring term Physics course contains extra problem-solving support and is designed for students who do not have a strong math background. The winter term courses are freshman priority. It used any of the resistors but except the 10 ohm one. Each observation, find the value of resistance, voltage and currents for series and parallel circuit. From the experiment, the sum of the currents that flow into a junction, any electric connection must be equal the sum of the currents that flow out of the same junction,it is followed the condition of kirchoffs Rules.

Kirchoff's Current Law or KCL, states that the "total current or charge entering a junction or node is exactly equal to the charge leaving the node as it has no other place to go except to leave, as no charge is lost within the node.

Kirchoff's Voltage Law or KVL, states that "in any closed loop network, the total voltage around the loop is equal to the sum of all the voltage drops within the same loop" which is also equal to zero OBJECTIVE To begin the experimenting with the variables that contributes to the operation of an electrical circuit and to prove Kirchhoffs Rules. The electric potential must have a unique value at any point, the potential at a point cannot depend on the path one takes to arrive at that point.

Therefore,if a closed path is followed in a circuit, beginning and ending at the same point. The algebraic sum of the potential changes must be zero The sum of the currents entering a node must equal the sum of the currents exiting a node. The first law is a simple statement of the meaning of potential.

Since every point on a circuit has a unique value of the potential, travelling around the circuit, through any path must bring you back to the potential. Using the analogy to elevation: If one hikes from a starting point of a mountain, taking several paths, then finishes at the same point, the sum of the elevation changes of each path had better add to zero.

The second law is the statment of current conservation mentioned before in the Ohm's law lecture. If all currents had been defined as enterning the node, then the sum of the currents would be zero. The resistors used except the 10 one.

The total resistance of the circuit was measured with no current flowed. The values was recorded. The circuit was interrupted and placed the DMM in series. Step 1 and step 5 was repeated.

All Rights Reserved. Texas, United States [ map ].This activity contains two open-ended labs for an upper-level undergraduate optics course: an acousto-optics lab and a diffractive optics lab. Through these labs, students can explore how an acoustic wave can cause light to diffract and how a lens can be used to take the Fourier transform of an aperture.

These activities work best for junior or senior level physics majors who are ready for activities that are more open-ended and less prescribed. In the course evaluations, the students really enjoyed the opportunity to explore topics on their own with the availability to come to the faculty member for guidance. The labs are designed for students working in groups of two, where each student took turns writing in the lab notebook and working with the optical set-up.

Although the activities worked with 3 students, the third student was generally not as engaged as the other two. These labs were part of a lab course taught in the term after the lecture course; however, these labs could also taught as part of a lab associated with an upper-level optics elective. The diffractive optics lab assumes the students are familiar with Fourier transforms. The selection of slits and apertures will be above and beyond this. You can be create about the objects to keep costs down.

For example students can use a strand of their hair, the edge of a ruler, the mesh of a piece of sheer fabric or a geology sieve, a blood smear slide from the biology department, etc. The photonics project, which is designed to be completed over a 10 week term, could be integrated into either a lab course or a lecture course. The project involves library research and contains a written and oral component. The students are given reading from the textbook to refresh their memory on the topic of the lab.

Although the material was covered in the PHYS which is a prerequisite for the lab, the reading is designed to refocus their attention on this material. Next students perform a series of problems Pre-Lab Exercises Acrobat PDF 28kB Oct31 11 related to calculations they may need to do as part of their data analysis or calculations that allow them to set-up the lab with the appropriate considerations e.

Next the students choose a particular aspect of the topic to study with the materials available. Some guidance is given to the students, however the students are also allowed some flexibility to choose experiments and measurements.

The diffractive optics lab is completed as part of the Fourier optics lab. The spatial filter part of the the lab is set-up and mostly aligned for the students before the lab because the initial set-up can take hours for individuals who are not familiar with this technique. The student adjust the spatial filter to optimize it. A wide selection of slit and aperture patterns are provided for students to explore during this lab.

Chose to take images of their patterns for their lab notebooks. The Photonics Project provides an opportunity for students to explore some area of optics that they are interested in, research the topic, present it to their peers in multiple forms, and also present their topic to a non-physics peer audience.

These are all activities that professional scientists must engage in as a regular part of their activities. There are 3 parts to this project: a paper and minute presentation geared towards their peers in the class and a creative project designed to present their topic to a non-physics peer audience.

A non-peer audience includes, but is not limited to: college students who are not science majors, college-educated educated adults who are not necessarily scientists, middle or elementary school students, high school physics students. Summary This activity contains two open-ended labs for an upper-level undergraduate optics course: an acousto-optics lab and a diffractive optics lab. In a typical lab science, students are using the lab to explore topics they are currently learning about in class.
